Terracotta tiles

Terracotta is one of the oldest subcategories of ceramic tiles. It translates from Italian, meaning “baked earth”. These tiles are made from a highly porous clay that contains high iron content. This gives terracotta tiles their reddish-brown colour. In this article, we will look at the pros and cons of terracotta to see if it is right for you.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

Terracotta tiles are very durable and strong. They are also naturally resistant to mould. This flooring is very long-lasting for both indoor and outdoor floorings. The rustic appeal of these tiles gives your home a natural, earthy feel. These tiles can come in a variety of different colours and textures too. This gives you many other options to explore if red is not what you are looking for.

Disadvantages

Terracotta tiles are porous, which means they absorb moisture and dirt easily. In cold climates, they may crack when water soaks into the tiles and freezes. The colours are not consistent between each tile. They can also be difficult to repair if one tile is cracked or damaged. Installation for terracotta is not easy, so we recommend having them installed professionally.

Maintenance

While terracotta tiles are used both outdoors and indoors, they are not recommended for cold or wet climates if unsealed. They will crack and absorb stains more quickly as well. In order to have longer lasting tiles, you need to have proper sealing. We also recommend regular re-sealing to best prevent stains, discolourations or other damages. The tiles itself are easy to maintain by wiping or mopping them. However, the grout used can be easily discoloured and require a higher level of maintenance.

Costs

The cost of terracotta flooring ranges depending on the type of tile being used. Thanks to its wide availability, it is more affordable than other types of ceramic tiles. When considering cost, you need to be aware of how the tiles are made. Handmade terracotta are much more expensive than machine-cut tiles. This is due to the amount of care that goes into each handcrafted tile. However, most terracotta tiles still fall under the affordable range.
